Polish mezzo Hanna Hipp is in great demand at major opera companies, including Glyndebourne, The Royal Opera, Garsington, Scottish Opera, the Royal Danish Opera (where she recently had a great success as Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale) and many others world-wide. She also has a busy concert career both in recital and with orchestra. Here, partnered by Italian pianist Emma Abbate, she explores women in song, with Robert Schumann’s great Frauenliebe und Leben songs at the centre. The brilliantly talented Clara Schumann was known as a concert pianist in her lifetime but, as her own songs demonstrate, she was also a very fine composer.

“[Hanna Hipp] sounds impulsively passionate throughout, though her soft singing is exquisite in moments of introspection”
