String Quartet in D minor D810, ‘Death & the Maiden’
Amsterdam’s Dudok String Quartet has emerged in recent years as a major force on the European chamber music scene - one of the most creative and versatile quartets of its generation. With its ethos of ‘sharing the heart of music’, the quartet believes that chamber music is an act of friendship and play to be shared directly with audiences.
‘What Remains’ by Dutch composer Joey Roukens is a meditation on time and memory. Influenced by Steve Reich, Roukens’s rich musical palette evokes memories, ghosts, ruins from a bygone age. Schubert’s great ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet is a passionate, drama-filled exposition of his view of the afterlife as both terrifying and consoling.
“Gripping performances...you’ll find yourself within the prickling skins of these works – and on the edge of your seat.”
